Desperate to escape her abusive stepfather, Sara Donaldson accepts a long-distance marriage proposal from Nathan. Because of her stepfather's tyranny, Sara finds herself intimidated by her new husband. Added to this are the lies she told in her initial communications with Nathan. Will Sara find the courage to make her marriage work? Will the faith she pretends to have become real in her heart?

Nathan had no intentions of marrying until his father's will compelled him to do so. Not happy about it, Nathan advertised for a wife. Sara feared her abusive stepfather and, in desperation, answered Nathan's ad. Nathan sought a wife who was over 21 and a Christian. Sara is 19 and she believes there is a God, but is fairly certain Nathan was requiring more. However, in her desperation to leave her stepfather, Sara chose to lie. When Sara arrives, Nathan is cold and distant. He has no desire to allow himself to feel deeply for his wife. He didn't need to experience another loss and he was quite fulfilled with his ranch. Sara had been told over and over again by her stepfather that she is scrawny and ugly and no man would ever want her. Seeing her husband's coldness and gruffness toward her, she realizes that her stepfather was right and knew that her husband found her to be unattractive to the point where he wanted nothing to do with her. What Sara doesn't realize is that actually the opposite is true; Nathan was surprised that such a beautiful woman would answer an ad to be a mail-order bride. He had counted on his wife being plain and unappealing, which would make it much easier for him to only feel friendship for her. However, when he sees Sara, he knows he must fight his feelings for her by keeping his distance. In the meantime, there is Mara who wanted Nathan to marry her. She does her best to put a spoke in Nathan and Sara's marriage. I enjoyed this story so much that I've read it three times since it was first published. Nathan is strong and caring. Sara is a friend anyone would want to have. Her bitter circumstances did not turn her into a bitter person. The love that grows between Sara and Nathan is precious to behold. This is a beautiful love story.Product details

Stranger Bride Kansas Brides Book 1 edition by Denise Hunter Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
I enjoyed the realism of this historical romance, delving into topics many women can relate to. A sweet romance also filled with tension, an enjoyable read!
I have only read two stories by this author. Of the two, this one is my favorite. This author isn't the best story teller for I thought she missed some important details, especially in the other book of here I have read. However, for a quick, clean, and sweet read, I thought it was well done.
Tears came to my eyes as the character overcame the past while trying to understand the present and looking at what the future may bring. This story shows how emotions will cause grief when all details are not known. The, stepfather, Pete comes to his demise; read to find Sara's emotions when she learns of what happened to Pete. Nathan McClain reaches a decision concerning his bride. Find the misconceptions that Sara gave when she answered Nathan's ad in the Boston newspaper. Denise Hunter is a Christian author who shows how, in her novel, the problem of characters such as Mara can hurt others.
As in the past, Me. Hunter delivers a great book, filled with love, problems and surprises. I enjoy books set in a different time frame, of the old west. Because of growing up in the country, it's easy to relate to Ms. Hunter's scenarios. However, city folks will enjoy her novels, too.
The misconceptions found within the pages of Stranger's Bride, and long-awaited clearing up of them, remind me of how we all make mountains out of molehills at times. But God ... He is ever faithful! Denise Hunter uses scriptures effectively throughout this book. Those serve to enhance and remind us who are reading it, of God's sovereignty. Blessings to all as you read this precious book, and discover why a tiny, city girl accepts a proposal from an unknown rancher. 😂
I've been reading a lot of Denise Hunter books and really enjoyed them, so I purchased the Kansas Brides set with high hopes. Unfortunately at least this first one fell far short of my expectations. The main characters were not believable, the preaching was very heavy-handed, the storyline never really went anywhere, and I feel like I barely got to know Sara and Nathan. The good news is, this is apparently one of Ms. Hunter's early works, so she obviously has grown a lot in her writing. I encourage readers to try her more recent offerings.
I wish I could give this book a higher rating. I have enjoyed Denise Hunters books in the past but this one was disappointing. It was very predictable and the plot was rushed at points. The relationship between Nathan and Sara could have been better developed and the conflict with Mara was very predictable and contrived. The story was sweet but I feel like Ms. Hunter missed an opportunity in fleshing out the growing love between Nathan and Sara. In a couple of paragraphs she goes from an untrusting, abused woman to falling in love and wanting a relationship. The gospel is clear in the story, which I appreciated, but I wonder if it would have been more compelling to make Nathan's character less of an angry rancher and more of a living example of selfless, sacrificial love that would then compel Sarah to seek the true unfailing love of the Father. This book was just lacking the chemistry and a compelling story line that I've seen in some of Ms. Hunter's earlier novels. This book seemed very formulaic and never fully drew me in. Disappointing.
This book was not at all what I expected. It felt like it was written for 12 year olds. The writing was poor, just lots of short sentences. The plot was silly. The character development was shallow and absolutely nothing about this book drew me in whatsoever. I only skimmed to the end because I actually spent money on it and felt like I should see it through in order to review it and not waste my money. I always feel bad posting a really negative review of something another person has worked hard on and poured into - but this book is really just not worth the time. Save a couple dollars and a couple hours. Unless you're under the age of 14, then maybe...?
